POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Girard, Hubbard and Liberty:

GIRARD

July 15

Vandalism: Numerous household and electronics items were damaged or destroyed at a residence in the 200 block of Ohio Avenue.

Criminal damaging: A woman noticed a large hole in a double-pane front window at her East Wilson Avenue residence.

Recovered property: Police found a 20-inch boys bicycle after a North Ward Avenue woman and her son had reported it stolen.

July 16

Possible breaking and entering: A man told police he believed someone had tried to enter his Mosier Road residence via a rear door, though authorities found no signs that the door had been tampered with.

Criminal damaging: A front window was broken at Tom’s Automotive Inc., 535 N. State St. The estimate was $800.

Drugs: Charges of drug abuse, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct were pending against a man after police responded to a disturbance on Front Street. The man had a small bag of suspected marijuana and admitted having abused several drugs, a report said.

Attempted breaking and entering: Authorities discovered an air-conditioning unit had been disturbed after someone tried to break into a church in the 10 block of East Kline Street. No entry was gained, however, they said.

Menacing: An East Broadway Avenue man said his son-in-law threatened to harm him.

Assault: A woman at Girard High School, 1244 Shannon Road, reported another woman shoved her by the shoulder, causing bruising to the affected area.

Breaking and entering: It was unknown if anything was missing from a storage unit in the 10 block of East Main Street that someone had tried to enter by kicking in the door.

Breaking and entering: Someone kicked in the rear door and broke into a business in the 20 block of East Liberty Street, though nothing seemed to be missing.

Robbery: A man walking home from a festival near North State Street told police two men followed him and that one of the men demanded money and punched him in the mouth before the victim fled.

July 17

Drugs: Officers responding to a possible drug overdose in the 100 block of East Wilson Avenue found a syringe and a spoon with suspected heroin residue as well as a small bag of suspected marijuana.

Theft: Someone removed a $250 go-cart from a porch in the 400 block of Ohio Avenue.

Menacing: A Patricia Drive man said another man threatened the accuser as part of a custody dispute.

Arrest: Police charged 21-year-old Justin A. Griffin, 2565 Elm Drive, Girard, with criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest while investigating a suspicious person in the 100 block of West Liberty Street. An intoxicated Griffin refused several times to give his name and address, then failed to cooperate with authorities, a report showed.

Arson: Someone apparently started a small fire to a deck in the 300 block of Forsythe Avenue, though damage was minimal.

Assault: A woman in the 600 block of Trumbull Avenue suffered a deep cut above her right ear after reporting a neighbor had choked, punched and knocked her to the ground, causing the accuser to strike her head, during an argument.

July 18

Criminal damaging: A business in the 300 block of North State Street sustained a broken front window.

HUBBARD

July 15

Theft of services: Police received a report regarding the theft of utilities, as well as an illegal tap into the city’s sewer system, in the 700 block of East Liberty Street.

Identity theft: A Youngstown-Hubbard Road woman accused a neighbor of using her husband’s bank-account information to make online payments.

Arrest: Hubbard police booked 19-year-old Zachary Runion, 4308 Wedgewood Drive, Austintown, on two felony counts of unlawful sexual contact with a minor.

July 16

Criminal mischief: An East Liberty Street woman noticed graffiti under a nearby bridge.

July 17

Assault: A Grandview Avenue man reported having been assaulted while in the 500 block of South Main Street.

July 18

Menacing: A Caroline Avenue woman said two people arrived at her home and challenged the accuser and her brother to a fight.

LIBERTY

July 15

Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A Holly Drive woman accused her son of taking and failing to return her 1995 Buick Skylark.

Theft: A man stole $25 worth of hair clippers from Rite Aid Pharmacy, 2704 Belmont Ave.

Arrest: A traffic stop near state Routes 11 and 711 resulted in 38-year-old Jennifer L. Snyder’s arrest on a charge of obstructing official business. Snyder, of 159 N. Richview Ave., Youngstown, provided a false name, date of birth and Social Security number, police said.

Drugs: Officers pulled over a car near Virginia Trail, then charged 29-year-old Melvin E. Miller, 4093 Madison Road, Youngstown, with a felony count of heroin possession. Two cut straws with a powder consistent with heroin as well as two bags containing a similar substance were found, a report said.

Theft/damage: Prescription medications were removed from a car in the 3000 block of North Gate Road after someone had broken a passenger-side window.

Arrest: Officers responding to an intoxicated person on Goldie Road charged Tina D. Hymes, 47, of 339 Breadon St., Youngstown, with disorderly conduct after saying she had yelled at customers of a nearby store, then initially refused to cooperate with police.

Drugs: Authorities responded to a possible disabled vehicle near Tibbetts-Wick Road before charging 46-year-old Mary E. Petrozzino, 1183 Patricia Drive, Girard, and Robert A. McCale, 56, of McDonald with misdemeanor counts of possession of dangerous drugs. More than 20 pills were loose in Petrozzino’s purse and five additional pills were wrapped in tin foil in a bottle, a report showed.

July 16

Burglary: To an apartment in the 3000 block of Green Acres Drive, from which a 32-inch flat-screen TV, a laptop computer and a video-game console were taken.

Burglary: Took place in the 3000 block of Green Acres Drive. Stolen were an Xbox game console and a video game.

Drugs: Vaughn Rhoden, 20, of 213 S. Pearl St., Youngstown, faced a misdemeanor charge of possession of dangerous drugs after having been pulled over on Fifth Avenue. Found was a bag of white pills with no prescription, police said.

Drugs: A traffic stop near Youngstown-Hubbard Road resulted in 34-year-old Johnson C. Sparkle’s being charged with a misdemeanor count of possession of dangerous drugs. Sparkle, of 1347 Douglas Ave., Youngstown, had in her purse 10 green pills in a small container, authorities said.

July 17

Criminal damaging: An Oriel-Rogers Road found on his vehicle several shattered windows.

July 18

Theft: Zanah G. Hassan, 18, of 2041 Saratoga Ave., Warren; Alonzo T. Torres, 20, of 260 North Heights, Youngstown; and Anthony Reid II, 24, of 325 Porter St. NE, Warren, were charged with theft and possession of criminal tools after a backpack and food were stolen from Walmart, 200 Goldie Road. Torres and Reid also were wanted by Warren police on charges of aggravated menacing, disorderly conduct and violating a protection order.

Fraud: A Redfern Drive man learned that someone used his credit-card number to make unauthorized purchases totaling about $1,130.

Menacing: A Craig Lane girl reported several boys came to her home in a threatening manner, and that her boyfriend sent a text message threatening to harm her.

Assault/criminal damaging: A Vienna man at a Trumbull Avenue business told authorities a friend struck the side of his head from behind and kicked the accuser, then damaged the windshield and other parts of his vehicle.

July 20

Domestic violence: Police charged 21-year-old Avery S. Qualls, 4003 Monticello Blvd., Liberty, with the crime after Qualls’ girlfriend alleged that during an argument, he threatened to kill her and came toward her holding a large piece of glass.
