Rash of summer fires sparks fears in Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Firefighters and residents are on edge here after a string of suspicious fires in the last few days.

More than a dozen fires at mostly vacant buildings in Toledo have erupted in just over a week.

Overnight and into this morning, firefighters were called out to five fires in a neighborhood east of downtown.

It’s the second summer in a row the city has had an outbreak of fires.

Toledo Fire Chief Luis Santiago tells The Blade newspaper he’s worried that someone might be trying to injure firefighters. That’s because they found holes in the floor near the stairs of one burning building.

He says it’s too early to know if any of the fires are connected.
