Ohioans told to beware of extreme heat, humidity

CINCINNATI (AP) — Forecasters and health officials are warning that the heat could be hazardous across Ohio.

In the words of a Cincinnati health department official: “It’s going to be awfully hot this week.” Dr. Steven Englender says it will be important for people spending time outside to take precautions, such as drinking lots of water even if they’re not thirsty.

Residents are being urged to check on the elderly and people with heart disease and other illnesses that make them less able to respond to extreme heat.

A National Weather Service heat advisory covers northwestern, central and southern Ohio because of heat and humidity that could make it feel like 105 degrees this afternoon.

“Cooling centers” have been opened in communities including Toledo, where Monday’s high temperature of 96 tied the record.
