Judge: Man gets 32 years in Chicago beating death

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man has been sentenced to 32 years prison for taking part in the videotaped beating death of a high school sophomore.

Twenty-year-old Eugene Riley on Tuesday became the fourth of five defendants to be sentenced for the 2009 attack on 16-year-old honors student Derrion Albert on the city’s South Side.

Juries found the five guilty of murder after repeatedly being shown footage of the attack that was posted online and that gained worldwide attention.

The final defendant, Lapolean Colbert, will be sentenced next month.

Assistant State’s Attorney James Papa says Riley could have walked away when he saw Albert being attacked as he lay on the ground. But he says Riley further inflamed the mob by taking a large wooden board and slamming it on Albert’s head.
