“Breaking Bad” (10 p.m. AMC): One of television’s finest dramas finally returns after a 13-month absence. When we last left Walt and Jesse (Emmy-winners Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul), they were locked in a heart-stopping standoff with Gus (Giancarlo Esposito), Walt’s understated but ruthless drug-lord boss. Now the fallout from that cliffhanger arrives, along with more anxious moments and at least one shocking twist. Will Walt and Jesse be able to keep their lucrative meth lab cooking in Season 4? Anna Gunn, Betsy Brandt and Dean Norris also star.

“Masterpiece Mystery!” (9 p.m., PBS): The show introduces a new detective in Aurelio Zen (Rufus Sewell), who fights crime in modern-day Italy. Tonight’s episode has him chasing a killer who is on a vendetta-fueled rampage.

“Bar Rescue” (10 p.m., Spike): If Gordon Ramsay can breathe new life into troubled restaurants, why can’t Jon Taffer do the same for struggling nightlife venues? In the opening episode he attempts to save a failing biker bar located beside a strip joint.
