On June 7, the second-graders of Sue Flasco’s Union classroom welcomed their best friends to school for the afternoon. These best friends had four legs and wagging tails.

The Union “Dog Show” was Flasco’s idea, after she heard how much her students talk about their pets.

“I’ve heard so many wacky stories about the pets here today, just through my students mentioning them in class. I wanted to welcome these members of the family to Union so that we could all be outside, all at one time, and introduce our four-legged friends to our two-legged ones,” Flasco said.

The pooch pow-wow began with many of the dogs barking and saying hello to one another, but once the excitement died down, many of the pet owners had a chance to chat about the joys of owning a dog.

Union mom Amy Palikaras brought her border collie, Honey, to meet up with her daughter, Camryn.

“We named Honey very well. She’s a laid back dog and she’s just a dream to take care of,” Amy Palikaras shared.

Mom Denita Walker and her daughter Anna’s only regret was that they couldn’t bring the whole family.

“We’re definitely animal lovers — we have two cats and three new kittens we found in our vacation home. We’re happy that we were able to bring our Yorkie, Brownie, though,” Denita Walker explained.

“Because they’re part of my students’ families, they’re part of the Union family, too. It’s been a really fun afternoon,” Flasco shared as the event wrapped up.
