Little Spartans registration set for Monday

The Boardman Little Spartans will conduct registration for the 2011 football season on Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the practice fields behind Center Middle School (across the street from the Southern Park Mall).

Eligible players must be between 6 and 12 on Aug. 1. A copy of the child’s birth certificate is required and will be kept on file. Little Spartans players must reside in or attend schools in the Boardman Local school system.

Last year’s rosters were over the 50 player limit. The youngest group of 6 to 8-year-old players had over the limit of 50 players registered.

“We want every child in the community to have an opportunity to play football. There are no tryouts, but we have to stop registering players when we run out of equipment to issue them. We spend a large amount of our budget to keep the kids in the best equipment we can. Safety is always a main concern, so we will not supply anyone with outdated equipment.” said Scott Aey, president of Boardman Little Spartans.

“One of the best things about our league is that we run two schedules for each age group. All players will get to play a lot in actual games. There is a weekend schedule and a JV schedule where those who don’t get many minutes will play in a complete game with referees during the week.”

This year, the 6 to 8-year-olds are coached by Dustin Strines. The 9 and 10-year-olds are coached by Pat Whitaker and the 11 and 12-year-olds are coached by Dave Matz.

Since there are no tryouts, register early to make sure you guarantee a spot. For more information, contact Patrick Whitaker at 330-758-1466 or email pwhit@zoominternet.net.
