In a perfect blend of community service and helping others, several members of Canfield Girl Scout troops volunteered to help run the 25 children’s games at the Canfield Fourth of July celebration.

The Girl Scouts were under the direction of Renee Benson, children’s games chair for the 2011 Fourth of July committee.

“I thought this would be a perfect project for the Girl Scouts to earn community service project hours,” said Benson, who has also been a Girl Scout leader for eight years. “The girls love getting involved and are having fun at the same time.”

Parents of the Girl Scouts also helped with the games, which included a ring toss, bean bag toss, spin the wheel and limbo.

Players were given small prizes, ranging from tattoos to highlighters to plastic rings to live goldfish, for their efforts. Two bounce arounds were also available for the children.

Benson also had volunteers from the Canfield High School National Honor Society helping with the games. Members of the society also earned community service hours.

“I couldn’t have done it without Denise Joseph, leader of Girl Scout Troop 261. She was my point person with the Girl Scouts and helped coordinate the project and helped get the girls here,” Benson said.
