1910: The term “Alzheimer’s disease” is used in the book “Clinical Psychiatry” by German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin in honor of his colleague, Alois Alzheimer, who’d identified the condition.

1916: Boeing Co., originally known as Pacific Aero Products Co., is founded in Seattle.

1971: President Richard Nixon delivers a televised address in which he startles viewers by announcing that he has received, and accepted, an invitation to visit the People’s Republic of China.

1976: A 36-hour kidnap ordeal begins for 26 schoolchildren and their bus driver as they are abducted near Chowchilla, Calif., by three gunmen and imprisoned in an underground cell. (The captives escape unharmed.)

1996: MSNBC, a 24-hour all-news network, makes its debut on cable and the Internet.

1986: A federal tax court judge warns U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. that he will be held in contempt of court if he continues to disregard rules of procedure and decorum. Traficant fired his lawyers and is representing himself against IRS claims for unpaid taxes on bribes.

The Farrell Area School Board hires a private food service management company to begin administering its cafeteria program in the fall.

1971: Youngstown City Council unanimously adopts a $28.3 million budget that has an anticipated $3.3 million deficit.

U.S. Rep. Wilbur Mills, chairman of the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee, meets in an emergency session with representatives of Youngstown United Steelworkers to discuss the shutdown of U.S. Steel Corp.’s Ohio Works.

1961: James Khoury, 67, or Boardman whose heart stopped beating after a heart attack is “brought back to life” by Dr. Elias P. Saadi and Dr. Paul J. Mahar who applied external heart massage at South Side Hospital.

Municipal Judge Forrest J. Cavalier says he is “at a complete loss” as to what prompted the unexpected dismissal of his personal deputy bailiff, William R. Durkin, by his two colleagues on the bench.

Common Pleas Judge David G. Jenkins issues a temporary injunction barring the Youngstown Transit Co. from raising bus fares until a full hearing is held. The increases were challenged by the city.

1936: The Ohio House and Senate are working on compromises in a multimillion dollar relief bill as they work toward adjournment following a 10-mon the session.
