Youngstown Phantoms forward Ty Loney has accepted a scholarship to the University of Denver and is leaving the USHL.

The son of former Pittsburgh Penguin Troy Loney, he tallied 23 goals and 19 assists (42 points) in 54 games during his second season with the Phantoms.

With the Pioneers, he’ll be skating with a Phantoms teammate, defenseman Scott Mayfield who was selected in the second round of June’s NHL draft by the New York Islanders.

“We are very happy for Ty,” Phantoms coach Curtis Carr said. “He is going to a top-notch program and he has worked very hard to get to this point.”

Loney will study in the area of digital media and marketing.

The men’s hockey program at the University of Denver has captured seven national championships, appeared in four NCAA Frozen Fours and participated in 21 NCAA tournaments.

“They have a great coaching staff and a great group of players,” Loney said. “There is always going to be pressure no matter where you are playing.

“Working with Scott will make things a little more comfortable but I feel that the real pressure will come when you are battling for playing time and a spot in the lineup,” Loney said.

In his first season with the Phantoms, Loney played 17 games and recorded two goals and two assists.

In June, Loney participated in the Phantoms’ training camp in preparation for their third USHL season at the Covelli Centre.
