Michael Morley, former Mahoning County Democratic Party chairman, announced Thursday that he will resign from the Mahoning County Board of Elections on Sept. 16. Morley’s term was to expire in about six months.

Current party chairman David Betras has accepted Morley’s resignation. In his letter, Morley said he wants to give his replacement the opportunity to participate in an election this November before the 2012 presidential election. Morley said he will be spending more time in Manhattan, but still will have an apartment in Youngstown.

The party’s executive committee will make a recommendation on a replacement Sept. 17. This name will be then forwarded to Secretary of State Jon Husted, who must give the final approval.
