‘Hansel and Gretel’ set at opera house

SHARPSVILLE, PA.

Allan R. Mosher will direct the Humperdinck opera “Hansel and Gretel” at the Pierce Opera House, 100 N. Mercer Ave., at 8 p.m. July 21 and 23.

Mosher is a voice professor and director of opera at Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music. He said “Hansel and Gretel,” based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, is suitable for adults and older children.

The production will feature professional singers from the Mahoning Valley and New York, as well as a children’s ballet and a choir, and a chamber orchestra under the direction of Maestro Thomas Bo.

Performers include two voice majors from the Dana: lyric mezzo-soprano Emily Alcorn of Poland as Gretel and baritone Trevor Coleman of Boardman as the father.

“Hansel and Gretel” is being sponsored by Valley Lyric Opera of Greenville and the Sharpsville Historical Society.
