Police standoff

BOARDMAN

A suicide threat turned into a police standoff Monday night at Southwoods Apartments.

Police said they received a call from the wife of a 45-year-old man who lives there and was threatening suicide. When police arrived around 9:30 p.m., the wife gave officers keys to the apartment. The man repeatedly said he was going to shoot the officers if they entered, police said.

Police evacuated residents. A negotiator was called, and the man came out of the apartment with his hands in the air, asking police to shoot him, officers said. The man refused to obey police orders to get on the ground and was verbally hostile, so police used a stun gun on him. Police said they did not find any weapons.

He was taken to a hospital and released Tuesday morning, then taken to Mahoning County jail, charged with intimidation, aggravated menacing and resisting arrest.
