Official: News about track is good for county
HILLSVILLE, Pa.
Supervisor Gary Pezzuolo called it “good news” at Tuesday’s meeting of the Mahoning Township Supervisors that the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission approved the stock transfer application of Valley View Downs’ harness-racing license from the bankrupt Centaur LLC of Indianapolis to American Harness Tracks LLC of Pittsburgh if certain conditions are met.
The proposed multi-million-dollar racetrack/casino complex would be located off U.S. 422 in Mahoning Township.
Pezzuolo said the township will be in much better financial shape if the track becomes a reality, and some revenue from the track would be used to pay off the debt for the sanitary sewer now under construction.
Also Tuesday, Pezzuolo said any resident unhappy with restoration of their property after installation of the sanitary sewer line should call the township now so problems can be addressed. The township number is 724-667-8801.
Supervisors also authorized township engineers RAR Engineering of New Castle to begin applying for Community Development Block Grants to help low-to-moderate residents tap into the sanitary sewer once the line is completed.
Pezzuolo said qualifying residents will get their $2,500 tap-in fee paid by the grant as well as the cost of installing the line to the house.
He said supervisors still do not know how much the monthly sewage bill will be, but said they hope to keep it in line with surrounding townships.
Greg DelPrincipe of RAR said that the sewage treatment plant is tentatively scheduled for completion in November.
Also Tuesday, supervisors authorized Roadmaster Mark Sackin to furlough two road workers if necessary.
Pezzuolo said after the meeting that the measure was passed in case the township budget runs short, but the furloughs probably won’t be necessary.
Township Solicitor Lou Perrotta said Police Chief Jim Morris is reviewing a list of applicants for a part-time police position and will conduct interviews before making a recommendation.
