Columbus Clippers pitcher Jeanmar Gomez will start for the Scrappers today at Eastwood Field.

In 14 starts this season for Columbus, Gomez is 9-3 with a 2.40 ERA.

He’s made four appearances with the Cleveland Indians this season, going 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA.

The Scrappers play the Connecticut Tigers at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.

YSU women’s hoops earn academic honor

Youngstown

For the first time, the Youngstown State women’s basketball team has been recognized on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll.

The Penguins had a combined grade-point average of 3.395 during the 2010-11 academic year, which ranks them 17th on the top 25 poll.

Two other Horizon League teams — Milwaukee and Green Bay — were also in the top 25, giving the league a tie for the most among any conference in the country.

Kaitlin Rohrs posted a 4.0 GPA in both semesters while Liz Hornberger and Brandi Brown had a 4.0 during the spring semester. Bojana Dimitrov boasted a 4.0 GPA during the fall semester.

U.S. team advances to gold medal game

INNSBRUCK, Austria

Playing its third game in five days at the IFAF Senior World Championship, the United States overcame its toughest test of the round-robin schedule, beating Mexico, 17-7, on Tuesday to advance to Saturday’s gold medal game.

Running back Nate Kmic (Mount Union) led U.S. receivers with six catches for 53 yards.

The title game can be viewed at www.ifaf.org starting at 5 p.m.

The U.S. men finished Group A play with a 3-0 record and will take on the winner of Japan and Canada in the title match. Those two countries play today in a Group B finale between 2-0 teams.

Malone, Walsh closer to Div. II

CANTON

The athletic departments for Malone University and Walsh University were notified on Monday that they are one step closer to becoming full NCAA Division II members.

Malone and Walsh were granted approval to advance from Year One Candidacy into Year Two Candidacy for NCAA Div. II membership. The transition process for an institution is a three-year one in which schools pass through Year One Candidacy, Year Two Candidacy and Provisional Membership stages prior to becoming a full member at the beginning of the fourth year.

Tennis class offered to Warren students

The Marcus Garvey Community Tennis Association is collaborating with the Warren Police Athletic League to offer an introduction to tennis.

The program is designed to teach tennis fundamentals to Warren-area students ages 9 to 14. It will be 9 to 11 a.m. July 20 and will run for four consecutive Wednesdays.

Sankovic receives second PFL ring

Patrick Sankovic, a junior at the University of Dayton, recently received his second championship ring after helping the Flyers win back-to-back Pioneer Football League titles.

The Canfield High graduate is a kicker/punter for the Flyers, a non-scholarship FCS team.

US-Brazil game gets big TV rating

BRISTOL, Conn.

The Americans’ wild quarterfinal win over Brazil earned the highest preliminary television rating for a Women’s World Cup game since the 1999 tournament in the United States.

The U.S. victory on penalty kicks Sunday drew a 2.6 overnight rating. ESPN said that was the best on any network since the ’99 World Cup.
