Crosscutters too much for Mahoning Valley Scrappers
Staff report
WILLIAMSPORT, PA.
Loud start. Quiet finish.
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored two runs in the first inning and were blanked the rest of the way, falling to the Williamsport Crosscutters 6-2 in a New York-Penn League game on Sunday.
Alex Lavisky went 2-for-3 with the Scrappers’ only RBI and Tony Wolters had two hits, two stolen bases and a run. Wolters stole one of those bases after his one-out single in the first. He then advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch.
Two walks and a strikeout later, Lavisky singled to center to score Jordan Smith and give the Scrappers a 2-0 lead.
Rob Nixon (1-2) then gave up three runs in the bottom half of the first before settling down. He gave up four runs on nine hits with two strikeouts to get the loss.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Mahoning Valley (14-10), which is 11/2 games back of Jamestown in the Pinckney Division standings.
Kyrell Hudson, Kelly Dugan, Harold Martinez and Kenny Miramontes each had two hits for Williamsport (11-13). Colin Kleven (1-1) gave up two runs over six innings to get the win.
The Scrappers finish their three-game series at Williamsport tonight, then get their first day off of the season Tuesday before starting a three-game homestand against Connecticut on Wednesday night at Eastwood Field.
