1919: President Woodrow Wilson personally delivers the Treaty of Versailles to the Senate, and urges its ratification. (However, the Senate rejects it.)

1929: American paper currency is reduced in size as the government begins issuing bills that are approximately 25 percent smaller.

1940: During World War II, the Battle of Britain begins as Nazi forces attack southern England by air. (The Royal Air Force is ultimately victorious.)

1951: Armistice talks aimed at ending the Korean War begin at Kaesong.

1961: Mildred E. Gillars, also known as “Axis Sally,” is paroled from a federal prison in West Virginia after serving 11 years for treason for her propaganda broadcasts from Nazi Germany during World War II.

1986: Three employees at an Austintown Township truck terminal are hospitalized after being exposed to toxic chemical leaking from a barrel in a tractor-trailer rig that pulled into the terminal.

Phillip W. Bova is named an assistant principal at Canfield High School at a salary of $38,165.

Tony Amendola, a custom baseball-bat carver for Rawlings Sporting Goods Co., demonstrates how to hand carve a baseball bat for appreciative crowds at the Eastwood Mall. It takes about half an hour for Amendola to make a bat for Claude Mott of Howland who brought a piece of wood Mott said he’d had at his house for years.

1971: Dr. Albert Pugsley, Youngstown State University president, says an increase to enrollment of 20,000 students would require a physical plant that would reach toward downtown Youngstown.

The first five of possibly hundreds of tax foreclosure lawsuits are filed in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court as Assistant Prosecutor Peter P. Michaeis leads a crackdown on tax delinquencies.

1961: A burglar who apparently hid in the store after closing time, ransacked parts of the store and escaped down a fire escape after the manager arrived in the morning. .

A 28-year-old bartender at the Ritz Bar on Wilson Avenue is fined $100 by Municipal Court Judge Don L. Hanni Jr. for serving alcohol to a minor.

The Mahoning County Board of Elections eliminates five precincts in Youngstown, bringing the total number of precincts in the county to 415.

1936: Youngstown Postmaster John Farrell, former chairman of the Democratic Party in Mahoning County, dies in his sleep of a heart attack, two days short of his 49th birthday.

Dr. William Dean Collier, nationally known authority on pathology and former professor at the University of St. Louis medical school, arrives in Youngstown to take up duties as head of the St. Elizabeth Hospital’s pathology department.
