Maddalen Amero, a teacher and foreign language department chairwoman from Boardman High School, has been selected as an NEH Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of 34 summer 2011 study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The endowment is a federal agency that supports seminars and institutes at colleges, universities and cultural institutions each summer so teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines.

Amero will participate in a program titled “The Art of Teaching Italian Through Italian Art.” The four-week program is in Rome and directed by Professor Emeritus Roberto Severino, Georgetown University, and co-directed by Professor Luigi De Luca, The Italian Cultural Society of Washington and Professor Lucia Dalla Mont , Ufficio Scuola, Embassy of Italy.

The approximately 715 NEH Summer Scholars will teach almost 90,000 American students the following year.
