A 78-year-old Youngstown woman was cited for failure to control after she drove into the house at 6975 Colleen Drive around 11:15 a.m. Thursday. Police said the woman was backing onto Colleen Drive from a private driveway when she became confused and accelerated rapidly in reverse, going over the curb, through the front yard and hitting the corner of the next house.
Fire destroys house
YOUNGSTOWN
Firefighters battled a blaze on the city’s South Side early Thursday. Firefighters said they received a call about a fire at 532 Falls Ave. at 7:58 a.m. and extinguished the blaze, but the house was destroyed. The woman who occupied the house was not home at the time, officials said.
Bear seen in Howland

Police and other safety officials received calls about a black-bear sighting in the township around 8 a.m. Thursday. Trumbull County dispatchers said two calls reported a small black bear in a tree on Shadowwood Lane Southeast on Thursday morning, and reports of black bears in Braceville came in Wednesday night.
Attempted break-in

A 20-year-old township man told police that a man tried to break into his apartment on Lemans Drive around 3 a.m. Thursday. Police said the man was on his couch when he heard a window rattle and saw a young man trying to open the window. The occupant yelled for the man to get out, and the suspect fled, according to reports. Officers said a police dog was able to track the suspect northeast before losing the track.
Training session

The Warren Police Department will have a Neighborhood Watch training session from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Luthern Church, 140 Cherry Ave. NW, and July 19 at Divine Trinity Church, 500 Vine St. NE.
The meetings will give an overview of how to operate as a watch in the community, being the “eyes and ears” of the Warren Police Department, how to collect and report information for law enforcement and how to reduce crime.
Training is for existing neighborhood watches or anyone interested in starting one.

Free smoke detectors
WARREN
The Warren Fire Department has received a shipment of 500 smoke detectors from the First Alert company and has distributed 400 of them to area churches to give away free to the public.
The churches receiving smoke detectors are: Grace AME Church on Main Avenue Southwest, Second Baptist Church on Main Avenue Southwest, AGAPE Assembly on Nevada Avenue Southwest, New Jerusalem Fellowship on Palmyra Road Southwest, Grace Church in the K-Mart Plaza in Niles and First United Methodist Church on North Park Avenue Northwest. The Warren Fire Department will give away its smoke detectors at the central fire station on South Street Southeast.
First Alert donated the smoke detectors for Warren residents following a fire June 16 on Landsdowne Avenue Northwest that killed four members of the Derek Dorsey family and two young relatives staying overnight.
Ruritan event
COLUMBIANA
The Fairfield Township Ruritan Club hosts its annual classic car, tractor and motorcycle show from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday along South Main Street.
Registration is by donation from 10 a.m. until noon. Admission is free. For information on the donation fee, contact Ken Nickalo, club vice president, at 330-482-2561.
There will be 50/50 drawings, disc jockey, food and trophies and more than 150 classic vehicles.
At the same time, the Columbiana Historical Society will have an open house to show its Log Cabin Museum on the Northeast corner of Columbiana’s circle.
There also will be a Volkswagen meet going on simultaneously that will be doing a traveling show throughout the Columbiana area that afternoon.
From 2 to 4 p.m., there will be a free concert in the city’s Firestone Park. The park’s pool also will be open.
