NEW SPRINGFIELD

Springfield Township trustees placed two 2-mill renewal levies on the November ballot during their meeting Wednesday.

One of the levies is for general operating expenses, and one is for fire and emergency-medical services.

Trustees also thanked police and the road department for the cordiality of the negotiations that preceded approval at a June 23 special meeting of new three-year contracts for both departments. Trustee Rick Jones said after the meeting that both contracts keep wages the same for the first two years then give a 2 percent increase in the third year of the contract. He said the police contract also provides for a small increase in the allowance for expenses incurred by patrolmen to maintain their weapons proficiency. The road department is represented by the Teamsters Union, and the police belong to the Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.

Trustees also awarded a contract for $41,197 to Henderson Truck Co. of Bucyrus for a dump-truck body, snowplow and hydraulics. Henderson was the low bidder.

Also Wednesday, trustees approved Angelo Colapietro and Dan Mannion as firefighters and Dan Farinelli as a firefighter and first responder pending background checks, physicals and drug testing.

Jeanne Scattergood questioned why the Summer-Kurtz burial ground on Springfield Road is neglected. Trustees promised to look into it.
