Father of deaf boy monitors drivers’ speed

MANSFIELD
An Ohio man using a radar gun and a video camera to monitor speeding cars says he is doing it out of concern for the safety of his deaf son and other children.
Charles Canankamp of Madison Township near Mansfield plans to stand outside his home for the next two weeks and record passing cars’ speed. He says they regularly travel 45 mph to 60 mph in the area that has a 25-mph speed limit and signs warning about a deaf child.
The Mansfield News Journal reports that Canankamp wants officers to travel down his road at least 30 times a day. Richland County sheriff’s officials say they don’t have that kind of manpower.
Canankamp hopes his results will lead authorities to do more monitoring.
