Youngstown-area skating club heads to Minnesota to compete
YOUNGSTOWN
The Skating Club of Greater Youngstown will compete against 84 teams in Blaine, Minn., after placing seventh out of 115 teams at the 2010 ISI World Recreational Team Championships.
The event is scheduled for July 25 through July 30 at the National Sports Center Schwan Super Rink, the country’s largest ice skating facility and one of the largest amateur sports complexes in the world. Visit www.skateisi.com for more details.
Maria Koman, skating club director, and Quinn Shaw, assistant director, both of Boardman, will lead this year’s SCGY World Championship Team, which comprises 26 skaters of all ages who will compete at different levels and in several disciplines. Team members come from the greater Youngstown area and Western Pa.
The event comes in the middle of SCGY’s six-week 2011 Summer Skating Program, June 20 to Aug. 11, hosted at The Ice Zone in Boardman. The program, an annual club offering, is available to both club members and any nonmembers who wish to further enhance and develop their skills and techniques in the sport of figure skating or hockey.
Classes offered range from beginning, basic skills through advanced as well as skating clinics in both sports. In addition, this year’s program also will offer, for the first time, a Zumba dance class.
