US stocks mixed; debt woes sink shares in Europe

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are mixed in early trading following a broad sell-off in Europe.

Moody’s downgraded Portugal’s debt to junk status late Tuesday. That raised fresh concerns about the European financial system. The Euro Stoxx 50, an index of companies in countries that use the euro, lost nearly 1 percent.

Investors will receive a report later today on the U.S. service sector. Economists expect that the Institute for Supply Management’s index expanded in June, though at a slower pace than in May.

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 3, or less than 0.1 percent, to 12,574. The S&P 500 is down 2, or 0.2 percent, to 1,335. The Nasdaq is down 3, or 0.1 percent, to 2,823.
