Youngstown Lions Club installs president, officers

Dr. Anderson said YSU’s biggest challenge is coping with continual cuts in state funding. She also expressed excitement about the many improvements at YSU, including the new Williamson School of Business and the indoor sports facility. At the same meeting, Jen Preisse, at left, was inducted into the club.
Youngstown Lions Club, which is among the top 100 oldest Lions clubs in the world, installed officers June 24. Brian Hughes, above, was installed as president.

The Youngstown Lions Club had its 90th installation of officers at The Youngstown Club on June 24.
Brian Hughes was installed as president.
The club was organized on Oct. 22, 1920, after the organization of the Lions International in 1917 as the 12th Lions Club organized in Ohio. There were 59 original members.
The Youngstown Lions Club is in the top 100 of the oldest Lions clubs in the world.
In 1922, when the club was only 2 years old, it was the first organization to take up sight saving as a community project at the urging of Helen Keller.
The club’s major fundraiser is the annual Turtle Derby. This year was the 50th annual derby, and the club raised more than $28,000.
In December the Lions sponsor a Christmas party for children with disabilities.
The club meets each week at the Youngstown Club and welcomes new members.
