Warren official offers advice on storm-damage repairs
Staff report
WARREN
Warren’s building official reminds consumers to take precautions if they are about to have a contractor work on their home to repair storm damage.
Warren has ordinances that require contractors to be registered with the city to perform repairs.
If a person hires an unregistered contractor and the homeowner is unsatisfied with the work, the city may not be able to help get the problem resolved, said Chris Taneyhill, building official.
When a contractor registers with the city, he must post a bond, and the bond gives the homeowner protection against poor workmanship, Taneyhill said.
The registration process includes a background check on the contractor, and a check with the Better Business Bureau. A contractor with an “F” rating will not be issued a permit, Taneyhill said.
A contractor making roof repairs in Warren also must obtain a building permit, and the property owner should get a receipt for the permit and should post the green building-permit card in the front window of the home, Taneyhill said.
The Ohio Insurance Institute, which represents the insurance industry, offers these additional tips for homeowners in the process of getting repairs done:
1. Obtain more than one estimate.
2. Obtain all information in writing, including work to be completed, repair time and payment schedules and guarantees.
3. Ask for references and check them.
4. Ask for a the contractor’s driver’s license and write the number down along with a description of the vehicle and license-plate number.
5. Never allow a contractor to serve as your negotiator with your insurance company.
