Towns in Ohio outlaw tossing candy from parades

LEBANON, Ohio

Some Ohio communities are banning candy from being thrown at their Fourth of July parades to reduce the risk of kids being struck by a float or other parade vehicle.

The Dayton Daily News reports that such a policy has been in place in many local communities for several years. Lebanon was to prohibit candy at its parade Saturday.

The executive director of the Lebanon Independence Day Parade says candy can’t be thrown for insurance reasons, though people could hand it out along the route.

Officials in other communities say they want to reduce the risk of accidents and keep children from rushing into the streets to pick up the treats.
