Record wet streak dries up in Valley
YOUNGSTOWN
The Mahoning Valley’s record streak of consecutive months in the all-time top 10 for most snow and/or most precipitation dried up in June.
Not only did this June fail to break into the top 10 wettest for that month, it also was well below average for precipitation.
Only 2.05 inches of rain fell on the area with most of it on three days: 0.4 of an inch on both June 7 and 23, and 0.61 of an inch on June 16, according to National Weather Service statistics.
The average precipitation for the Mahoning Valley in June is 3.91 inches.
Even with a dry June, the first six months of this year are the second wettest first-half of a year in recorded Valley weather history, dating to 1896, said Ian Lee with the National Weather Service in Cleveland.
As of Friday, 29.56 inches of precipitation has fallen on the area for the first six months of the year.
The record for the first six months of the year is 1950 with 30.52 inches, Lee said.
This month is supposed to be an average July in precipitation, Lee said. The Valley averages 4.1 inches of precipitation in July.
June ended the area’s record for making the all-time top 10 in most snow and/or most precipitation at seven consecutive months, starting with November 2010. The previous record was three consecutive months, happening a number of times with December 2007 to February 2008 being the most recent.
The 8.32 inches of precipitation in May was good enough for the second-wettest May on record.
A month earlier, there was 6.87 inches of rain, the second-wettest April on record.
The 5.14 inches of precipitation in March was the ninth-most for that month.
The 20.6 inches of snow in February was the eighth-most for that month, and the 5.03 inches of precipitation was the third-wettest.
The 30 inches of snow in January was the seventh-snowiest for that month.
In December, the Valley had 53.1 inches of snow. That’s the most snow to fall in the area for any month.
In November, 4.45 inches of precipitation fell, making it the eighth-wettest for that month.
