Miami cornerback headed to YSU

YOUNGSTOWN

Former University of Miami cornerback Devont’a Davis will transfer to the Youngstown State football team, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Davis, who did not return calls seeking comment, redshirted last season with the Hurricanes and will have four years of eligibility remaining. Miami fired head coach Randy Shannon in November and hired Al Golden in December.

NSA tournament set at McCune Park

CANFIELD

The National Softball Association will hold a state tournament this weekend at McCune Park.

Seventy teams with players from ages 10 through 18 will participate.

Games begin today at 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m.

Junior golf tournament

YOUNGSTOWN

The junior golf tournament held by the City of Youngstown Department of Parks & Recreation will be today at the Henry Stambaugh Golf Course.

The event is for boys and girls age 12-18 and runs from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Blaney Memorial set for July 12

The Lou Blaney Memorial race is set for July 12 at Sharon Speedway. NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne and Dave Blaney will drive Sprint cars.

The 410 Sprint Cars and the Governor Insurance Agency Big-Block Modifieds will again be on the card for this two-division headlining program.

The night honors the accomplishments of Hall of Fame driver Lou Blaney, who won more than 600

feature victories during a five-decade career.

YMCA offers triathlon

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Central YMCA will hold an adult and youth triathlon on July 17.

The bicycle course will be in Mill Creek Park while the running course will be at Youngstown State University.

Flyers drop Stamkos pursuit

Forget the Steven Stamkos hype. The Flyers have decided not to pursue the Tampa Bay superstar.

Yes, the Flyers kicked the tires and thought about giving the 21-year-old center an offer sheet.

“But it was nothing serious, really,” Peter Luukko, president of the Flyers’ parent company, Comcast-Spectacor, said Thursday evening.

The Flyers, who are now among the teams interested in 39-year-old winger Jaromir Jagr, are happy with the team general manager Paul Holmgren has assembled, Luukko said, and would have had to remove some key pieces to fit Stamkos under the cap.

Fielder, Ortiz named derby captains

NEW YORK

Prince Fielder and David Ortiz will get to pick their teammates for the All-Star Home Run Derby.

Major League Baseball has announced that Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers was chosen as captain of the National League squad and Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox was picked to be the American League captain.

The last two derby winners will each pick three teammates for the July 11 slugfest at Chase Field in Phoenix. The leagues will compete against each other in this year’s event.

Ortiz was the derby champion last season and Fielder won in 2009.
