Hubbard school kicks off annual Relay for Life event

HUBBARD

Catholic Schools Week begins today, and St. Patrick School in Hubbard will open it with its annual Relay for Life. This year, some new features have been added.

New this year will be stations in the center of the gym that focus on health and fitness. They include a fitness station, a water station, a healthy snacks station, a sunscreen station, a links against cancer station and more.

The lineup for the day follows:

8:30 a.m.: Opening ceremonies with speakers, survivor lap, luminaria lighting and reading of names, then the entire school lap.

9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Mammovan will be at the school.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Students walk laps for 30 minutes each.

11a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Lunch break.

2 p.m.: Closing ceremonies, thank-yous, awards and balloon launch.

The students have had two dress-down days for the cause and have raised more than $200. They also have initiated a poster contest and a loose-change classroom contest.

The school has raised more than $10,000 for the American Cancer Society since the event began. Students in grades K-8 started the team “Knights for a Cure” last year. This year they will participate in the 2011 Relay for Life Youngstown and sleep over at Beeghly Center at YSU for the second time.
