The Springfield Board of Education will have a board planning-committee meeting at 8:30 a.m. today at Denny’s Restaurant, U.S. Route 224. Board members will discuss long-term planning.

Appreciation meal

Leaders of two Catholic churches will have an appreciation dinner for a local restaurant Tuesday.

The Rev. Edward Noga of St. Patrick Church and the Rev. Greg Maturi of St. Dominic Church are hosting a dinner to support The Boulevard Tavern, 3503 Southern Blvd. The event is from 5 to 9 p.m., and any customers who mention either church will receive $2 off their bill.

Bowl-a-thon set

The John F. Kennedy High School basketball team is raising money to benefit Junior Achievement. Team members are having a bowl-a-thon from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Crest Lanes, 3390 Youngstown Road SE. Three teams of players are participating and have raised $500 so far for JA programs.

Robbery probed

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating the robbery of a 19-year-old woman walking on the East Side earlier this week.

The woman was walking along Sunshine Avenue on Wednesday night when a man pulled alongside her and asked for directions. The woman told police she gave the man directions and continued to walk, but the man got out of the car and snatched her purse.

Reports say the man and woman fought over the purse, both falling to the ground. The man eventually took the purse and got back into his car and drove off but left behind a pair of slippers he had been wearing.

Bracelet stolen

Police are looking for the individuals who stole a $4,500 diamond bracelet from a local jewelry store.

An employee of LeRoy’s Jewelers in the Southern Park Mall told police a man looked at numerous pieces of jewelry Thursday. He was joined by another man and a woman.

When the trio left, the woman took inventory around 8 p.m. and noticed the diamond tennis bracelet missing and called police.

Reports describe the first man as a black male, about 5 feet 10 inches, between 250 and 260 pounds with tattoos, including one spelling “savage” on his right hand. Descriptions were not provided for the others.

Shooting at house

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating a shooting into a house on the East Side that forced a woman and her children to run for cover.

Shots rang out in the 700 block of Bennington Avenue at 8 p.m. Thursday. A 35-year-old woman told police she heard the bullets hit her front window, forcing her and her children to run into the bathroom for cover. Police found four bullet holes in the outside of the house. No one was injured.

Town-hall meeting

SALEM

U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson of Poland, D-6th, will have a town-hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Salem Community Center. Johnson has plans to move from Poland and relocate to the Marietta area, the central part of the 6th Congressional District.
