The residents of Boardman Shepherd of the Valley knew it was time to celebrate National Popcorn Day on Jan. 19 when the distinctive buttery smell started to permeate through every corner of the facility.

“Well, of course National Popcorn Day isn’t a normal holiday, but we think everything is worth celebrating,” explained activity director Joan Testa. “Here, we try and celebrate the traditionally-celebrated holidays and the out-of-the-way ones. Families are always invited to the events, because they are really important to our residents.”

Boardman Shepherd’s celebration of National Popcorn Day had residents meeting in their activity room,

Fellowship Terrace, to enjoy some popped kernels and music. Activity assistants manned the old-fashioned popcorn machine and sold two different sizes of the treat for a reasonable 35 and 50 cents, respectively.

With the distinctive smell everywhere, assistants and nurses like Brittany Woods and Michelle Melillo couldn’t help but wander in and celebrate the holiday by buying a bag.

“Today was definitely fun,” said Testa as the party winded down. “I guess the trouble now is getting all those kernels out of our teeth.”
