Barn animals perish

GREEN

Green Township firefigthers responded to a blaze at 3:06 p.m. Saturday that destroyed a barn and killed 15 pigs, a horse and twin calfs.

The fire at 7050 Calla Road “was blowing out of both ends” of the barn when crews arrived, according to Fire Chief Todd Baird.

The owner of the barn is Baird’s cousin, Matt Baird.

No people were injured.

Kasich to tour GM

LORDSTOWN

Gov. John Kasich will tour GM’s Lordstown Assembly Plant on Tuesday during his first visit to the Mahoning Valley since he was elected in November.

The governor will be accompanied by Valley lawmakers, including U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th; Ohio Senate Minority Leader Capri Cafaro of Hubbard, D-32nd; and state Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Canfield, D-33rd.

The politicians also will discuss the Mahoning Valley’s economic- development needs.

Kasich met with GM executives recently in Detroit to discuss how he could work with them to help them be more successful in Ohio.

“I love the Cruze. It’s a great car that I’m proud to say is built in Ohio, and I’m looking forward to meeting the folks who build it. I’m also eager to hear from local leaders on how I can work with them to meet our shared goal of leveraging the Valley’s assets to help create jobs and revive the economy,” Kasich said in a press release.

Victim now jailed

WARREN

The victim of a drive-by shooting in Warren Wednesday is now behind bars.

D’Marko Harper was released from Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital on Friday after being shot in the chest in the parking lot of Rocky’s AM-PM.

Harper was wanted for failure to appear in court in November on a burglary charge.

No one has been arrested in his shooting.
