Wayt leads Canfield youth wrestlers to title

Canfield Wrestling Club’s Christian Wayt was voted tournament MVP by the coaches at the Akron Springfield Invitational.
Wayt had four pins and a technical fall (14-1) on his way to capturing the 56-pound tournament championship.
“Christian is an exciting wrestler to watch. He has great speed, good balance and solid technique,” said coach Dave Crawford. “He qualified for the OYWA state tournament last year; he expects to place this year.”
As a team, the Cardinals had 12 placers in the top four at the eight-team event. In addition to Wayt, David Crawford (95), Braxton Madison (100) and Georgio Poullas (105) captured titles.
Alec Herman (52), Nick Crawford (82), Dominic Cooper (90), Daniel Kapalko (95) and Hunter Mersing (150) placed second. Andy Garr (73) took third and Zach Bernat (120) placed fourth.
Canfield will host the OYWA Sectional Jan. 30 at Canfield Middle School. Wrestling starts at noon and the top four placers in each weight class will qualify for the district tournament at Fitch the following week.
