Miller is busy

PONTIAC, MI

Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge will be a judge for two boxing matches at the Pontiac Silverdome on Jan. 29.

One fight will send champion Tim Coleman (Baltimore) against Vernon Paris (Detroit) for the USBA Junior Welterweight Championship.

In the main event, WBC Junior Welterweight Champion Devon Alexander (St. Louis) faces WBO Junior Welterweight Champion Tim Bradley (Palm Springs, CA.).

The main event will be telecast on HBO Sports.

Sweden beats US 2-1

CHONGQING, China

Sweden rallied for a 2-1 victory over the United States on Friday in the opening game of the Four Nations Soccer Tournament in China, a warmup for this year’s World Cup.

The Americans took an early lead when Carli Lloyd headed in the first corner of the game in the 11th minute. Stina Segerstrom equalized just five minutes later, and Kosovare Asllani netted the winner in the 60th with a shot inside the left post.

The U.S. will face Sweden at the World Cup in Germany on July 6 in their last opening-round match, after games against North Korea June 28 and Colombia on July 2.

Aqueduct canceled racing because of snow

NEW YORK

Aqueduct canceled Friday racing because of an overnight snowstorm in the New York area.

Both Aqueduct and Belmont Park remained open for out-of-town simulcasts.

Racing was expected to resume today at 12:30 p.m.

Reba is Tops takes feature by a nose

ARCADIA, Calif.

Seven-year-old mare and overwhelming favorite Reba Is Tops had to hold on to win by a nose after a late resurgence from Linda Lou in Friday’s $59,800 feature for fillies and mares at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Joe Talamo, Reba Is Tops had come from fourth to take the lead from Linda Lou and was ahead by a length coming out of the turn, but the pacesetter came back and nearly nabbed her at the finish.

Stephane Diagana injured in accident

PARIS

Former world champion hurdler Stephane Diagana of France has been hit by a car while riding his bike. He seriously injured his head but his life is not in danger.

The French track and field federation told The Associated Press that the accident happened in the Nice region Friday and Diagana was airlifted to a hospital.

Federation spokesman Jean-Philippe Manzelle says Diagana’s “days are not in danger” without giving further details.

Miesque euthanized

VERSAILLES, Ky.

Two-time Eclipse Award winner Miesque has been euthanized because of medical problems from advanced age. She was 27.

She was one of the top female runners and was put down at Lane’s End Farm.

Miesque won the Breeders’ Cup Mile in 1987 and 1988 for trainer Francois Boutin and jockey Freddie Head. Owned by Stavros Niarchos, Miesque won 12 of 16 lifetime starts and never finished outside the top three while earning more than $2 million in purses.
