Canfield wrestlers continue hot streak

Neighbors | Submitted.The Canfield Village Middle School wrestling team celebrated its 72-3 victory over Hubbard on Jan. 5.

The Canfield high school and middle school wrestling teams each claimed victories to begin the 2011 portion of their schedules.

On Jan. 8, the Canfield junior varsity Red team won the Akron Garfield Duals tournament. The tournament was a varsity event, so the Red team went up against five varsity squads from the competing schools.

Canfield beat Akron Kenmore (60-10), Akron Garfield (63-22), Akron Buchtel (72-14), Akron Coventry (51-33) and Cleveland John Adams (47-36).

Top grapplers for the Cards going undefeated on the day were Kyle Hido (4-0), Steve Daprile (2-0), Jake Dunbar (5-0), Alec DeChurch (5-0), John Poullas (5-0), Steve Hamilton (5-0) and Nick Borucki (3-0). Also turning in strong performances were Brian Batton (4-1), Matt Ben (4-1) and Sam Connor (4-1).

On Jan. 5, the varsity Black team beat rival Hubbard 60-19.

Posting wins for the Cards were Anthony Spencer (103), Korey Frost (112), Robby Reed (130), Alex Benedict (135), Richard Rapone (140), Lucas Daprile (145), Eric Mirto (160), Mike Flanagan (189), Curtis “Mad Dog” Burns (215) and Rob Gleichert (285).

Nine of the 10 Canfield victories came via pinfall.

In limited JV action, Sam Connor and Stephen Hamilton were victorious, while Tibor Baki lost a hard-fought battle.

On the same night, the middle school team dominated Hubbard 72-3 in a dual match.

The Cards won 13 of the 14 matches. Winners included Kyle West (80), Isaiah McInnis (92), Jeff Shaffer (98), Ross Duffet (104), Nick Phillips (110), CJ Frost (116), Ryan Murphy (122), David Labra (128), Matt Burns (134), Jaret Bunch (142), Cameron Tareshawty (150), David Hofsess (160), Jake Esarco (172) and Joey Kolesar (205).

“The boys wrestled great against Hubbard tonight, but there is always room for improvement,” said coach Steve DeMaiolo. “We need to improve on a few things in order to put ourselves in position to defend our EOWL [Eastern Ohio Wrestling League] title in February.”
