School board members were updated on the progress in the district’s participation in the Race to The Top program.

Race to the Top is a federal effort to reform public schools. Canfield has signed up for the four-year program, and the district receives $25,000 through a grant each year.

Jo Taylor, Canfield Village Middle School Principal for seventh and eighth grade, said at Wednesday’s board meeting she is still looking for teachers from each building to volunteer for two subcommittees and has met with staff from three of the four buildings to answer questions about the grant.

Superintendent Dante Zambrini told the board that several Ohio schools have dropped out of the program and money awarded to those schools likely will be redistributed to the districts still participating in Race to the Top.

During the meeting, Richard Archer, business manager, spoke to the board about the possibility of establishing and licensing the school’s official logo and name so the district might benefit from its use outside the schools.

The board also elected new leaders during its first meeting of the year. Brian Kesner will serve as board president, and Adrianne Sturm was elected vice president. Meetings for 2011 will be at 6:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month in the board room at 100 Wadsworth St.
