Memorial chili cook-off set for Boardman church

BOARDMAN

The Sue Hernan Memorial Chili Cook-off will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Boardman United Methodist Church, 5809 Market St.

The fundraiser is sponsored by Boardman United Methodist Missions Committee.

On Aug. 1, Hernan drowned in an accident at Berlin Lake while saving her two grandchildren.

Hernan had served as the chairwoman for the missions committee at the church for the past four years.

During her term she organized various fundraising activities. Her chili cook-off was one of her biggest projects.

This year the committee has decided to name the event in Hernan’s honor. Funds from this event will help support mission work around the world.

Hernan also helped plan many mission trips to Mexico. She worked as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Warren. She traveled with medical personnel and members of the church to Juarez, Mexico, on three occasions.

The group delivered food and blankets to the poor, gave medical attention to the sick and rebuilt parts of a church in one of the poorest sections of the city.

The missions group also has been active in rebuilding New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and has assisted Haitians after the earthquake. Other mission work focuses on areas in the Mahoning Valley and in Ohio.

For more information contact Peg or Ash Welsh at the church. Also look for more information on Facebook. Cathy Pokrivnak is the mission chairwoman. Call her at 330-518-9544.
