A story in The Vindicator on Jan. 15, “KSU gets state approval to offer Doctorate of Nursing Practice,” said the American Association of Colleges of Nursing requires that all entry-level advanced-practice educational programs be transitioned from the Master of Science in Nursing degree to the DNP degree by the year 2015. AACN says it cannot mandate that requirement. The members of AACN, which are schools of nursing nationwide with baccalaureate and/or graduate nursing programs, did vote to move the preparation of advanced-practice registered nurses from the master’s to the doctoral degree by the target date of 2015. The 2015 date is not a mandate, and AACN recognizes that some schools will be able to transition by the time, and some schools will not.
