Guards won't be charged over Ohio inmate's suicide

LIMA, Ohio (AP) — An official says three guards at an Ohio prison won’t face criminal charges stemming from an investigation into an inmate’s suicide.

Authorities investigated whether the guards regularly checked on Jason Stone as they were supposed to do. Stone was found hanged by a bed sheet tied to a cell window on Oct. 14. A state patrol sergeant has said Stone may have been dead for eight hours.

Lima Law Director Tony Geiger tells the Lima News no evidence showed the guards’ actions led to the death of the 21-year-old Stone, who was sentenced for a fatal stabbing.

An Allen Correctional Institution spokesman says the three guards still face disciplinary hearings. They’re on paid leave.
