St. John’s beats No. 9 Notre Dame in Big East upset

NEW YORK

D.J. Kennedy and Malik Boothe both scored 14 points and St. John’s beat No. 9 Notre Dame 72-54 on Sunday, reversing the outcome of their game eight days ago.

The Red Storm (11-5, 4-2 Big East) lost 76-61 at Notre Dame on Jan. 8.

St. John’s led this game 26-19 at halftime, holding the Irish to a school-record low four field goals in the opening 20 minutes.

West Virginia 68, No. 8 Purdue 64

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.

Kevin Jones scored 17 points and West Virginia used a late 18-6 run to hold off Purdue.

John Flowers added 15 points, Truck Bryant scored 12 and Joe Mazzulla had 10 for West Virginia (12-4).

Purdue’s JaJuan Johnson scored 26 points.

Minnesota 69, Iowa 59

MINNEAPOLIS

Trevor Mbakwe had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Ralph Sampson III matched his career high with seven blocked shots for Minnesota.

Sampson scored 11 points with six rebounds and four assists for the Gophers (14-4, 3-3 Big Ten).

Melsahn Basabe led the Hawkeyes (7-10, 0-5) with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Wright State 69, Butler 64

N’Gai Evans scored a career-high 26 points as Wright State rallied in the final minutes.

With Wright State (12-7, 5-2 Horizon League) trailing 62-61, Evans drove to the basket and scored over Butler big men Andrew Smith and Matt Howard with 46 seconds left. Smith fouled Evans, who made the free throw for a 64-62 lead. After a Butler miss, Evans added two more free throws for a 66-62 lead with 29 seconds left.

Down 67-64, Butler (13-6, 5-2) tried to tie the score when Shelvin Mack fired a 3-point attempt from the top of the key. Troy Tabler grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 2.6 seconds left. He made both free throws.

Cooper Land added 13 points for Wright State. Andrew Smith led Butler with 15 points, and Mack and Matt Howard scored 12 apiece.

Valparaiso 78, Detroit 68

DETROIT

Brandon Wood scored 17 points and Matt Kenney had 16 for Valparaiso.

Ryan Broekhoff added 10 points for the Crusaders (14-5, 6-1 Horizon).

Nick Minnerath finished with career highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Titans (10-9, 4-3).

Bowling Green 62, Miami, Ohio 53

A’uston Calhoun scored 11 points to lead four players in double figures for Bowling Green.

Scott Thomas, Luke Kraus and Jordan Crawford added 10 points each for Bowling Green.

Orlando Williams led the RedHawks with 14 points.

W. Michigan 65, E. Michigan 48

KALAMAZOO, Mich.

Matt Stainbrook scored 17 points and Nate Hutcheson had 16 for Western Michigan.

Demetrius Ward added 10 points for the Broncos (9-7, 2-1 MAC).

Derek Thompson led Eastern Michigan (4-12, 1-2) with 17 points.

Buffalo 73, Akron 70

BUFFALO, N.Y.

Byron Mulkey scored 17 points and Jarod Oldham made two free throws with 10 seconds left for Buffalo.

Brett McClanahan led Akron with 15 points while Brett McKnight added 12. Nikola Cvetinovic and Darryl Roberts had 10 each.
