NJ city braces for massive layoffs

CAMDEN, N.J.

Camden is bracing for layoffs that could cut one-fourth of the city government workers. Exactly how many jobs are eliminated Tuesday depends partly on whether public-workers’ unions make last-minute concessions. If not, about half the police department and one-third of the fire department could be cut. In all, up to 383 jobs are on the line. Local activists say the quality of life could suffer in a city that’s already among the nation’s poorest and most crime-ridden. But officials say they have no choice as tax revenue keeps falling, and the state cuts its aid.
