Victorian Players gets $6,000 grant

YOUNGSTOWN

Victorian Players Theater, 702 Mahoning Ave., has received a $6,000 grant from The Youngstown Foundation to replace or repair its windows.

The theater is housed in a former church building built in the 1890s and is plagued by high heating bills because of the drafty stained-glass windows. Marilyn Higgins, managing director of the theater, said a date hasn’t been set for the start of the work.

BOARDMAN

Author Dick Houston of Ashtabula will give a program and sign copies of his new book, “BULU: African Wonder Dog,” at 7 p.m. Friday at Barnes & Noble, 381 Boardman-Poland Road.

“BULU” is the true story of a Jack Russell terrier-mix dog that demonstrated an ability to bond with and act as “foster” parent to orphaned baby elephants, warthogs, monkeys and other wildlife brought to the Chipembele Wildlife Education Center in Zambia.

Houston, who spent more than 20 years in Africa leading safaris and teaching school, is president of Elefence International, a wildlife conservation organization focusing on elephants in Africa.
