Varsity matmen split at double dual

The Poland varsity wrestling team split a pair of dual matches against Division III power Jackson-Milton and Brookfield on Jan. 5.
The Bulldogs defeated Brookfield 51-18 by winning none of the 14 matches. Key matches for Poland were Max Prizant’s 5-1. Tad Duran’s second period pin and AJ Shields pin at 5:37 after being by behind by three points.
Other victories for Poland came from Joel Miller, Jordan Ziegler, Edwin Figueroa, Mike Audi, Bob Bricker and Mitch Lidle.
Against state-ranked Jackson-Milton, Poland jumped out to an 11-0 lead after winning the first three matches. Prizant won 7-0, Duran scored a 15-0 technical fall victory and Shields earned a 4-2 triumph. Bob Bricker scored an exciting pin using a body scissors in 2:47.
Poland’s Justin Ladesic lost 10-8 in overtime, after wrestling up a weight class.
“Justin wrestled up from 171 to 189 and gave that kid everything he could handle and more,” said Poland varsity coach Tony Stellato. “Justin was clearly the wrestler that was in better shape. We will see him again.
“I am very pleased with the way our kids wrestled today. I can pull something positive from each one of our matches, which shows that we are moving in the right direction, and the kids are starting to figure out the sport and the system that we are putting into place.”
Duran currently leads the team in most victories this season with 10.
