Rotarians learn about Relay for Life

Neighbors | Submitted.Austintown Rotary President Susan Leetch (left) presented Francesca Kostek from the American Cancer Society a book that will be donated to the Woodside Elementary School library in her name..Kostek was the guest speaker at the recent Rotary meeting and talked about the Relay for Life and all the event does for cancer patients and survivors.  

Francesca Kostek from the American Cancer Society spoke about the Relay for Life at the Jan. 10 meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown.

The society’s big event been going on for 27 years nationwide and the last 12 in Austintown. Last year, 200 survivors marched to open the Austintown event, which was 50 more than the previous year.

Austintown Rotary served a dinner for them with the help of Walgreen’s and the Fitch Interact Club. The Austintown Relay for Life raised over $100,000.

This year’s Relay is scheduled for June 10-11 at Fitch High School.

Kostek also talked about the many services for cancer patients that this event pays for, such as Hope Lodge in Cleveland and Cincinnati, Patient Navigators who provide social services for patients, and Reach for Recovery, which provides transportation for those in need.
