Reed, Benedict take third at Medina
Canfield’s Robby Reed (130 pounds) and Alex Benedict (135) more than held their own at the Medina Invitational, one of northeastern Ohio’s toughest tournament Dec. 28-29. The pair finished third in their respective weight classes, maneuvering through a 32-man bracket to earn a spot on the awards podium.
As a team, Canfield coach Dean Conley was pleased with the performance, as it prepare for the stretch run in January and February.
“Robby and Alex wrestled very well in the tournament. All of our kids wrestled hard and we are looking forward to EOWL [Eastern Ohio Wrestling League] and some other key matches coming up,” said Conley.
Other wrestlers to post multiple wins for the Cards at Medina were Anthony Spencer (103), Korey Frost (112), Zach Kay (119), Lucas Daprile (145) and Mike Flanagan (189).
The junior varsity squad took on five varsity squads at the Girard Duals on Dec. 29. The Cards went 1-4 in dual matches.
Top grapplers included Matt Dunbar (3-2), Brian Batton (3-2), Alex DeChurch (3-2), Shawn Williams (3-2), Stephen Hamilton (3-1), Stan Socha (3-1), Sam Conner (3-1), Robert Gleichert (4-1), Adam Nye (3-0) and Matt Ben (3-2).
Canfield’s wrestlers of the week were Robby Reed for the varsity team and Adam Nye for the junior varsity squad.
