The Poland Middle School seventh-grade Technology Education classes recently took part in an activity to see who could build the best support structure that would hold the most dictionaries.
The only supplies students were given were one sheet of 8.5-by-11 heavy drawing paper, a minimal amount of masking tape and scissors.
While building their structure, students had to ensure that the dictionaries were raised at least 1 inch off a desk, but no more than 2 inches.
Using problem solving techniques and trial and error, the winning group made a structure that was able to support 19 dictionaries and 13 science textbooks.
The winning team members included Alyssa Krut, Lauren Aey, Dominica Acevedo, Hannah Wolfe and Katherine Weaver.
The second-place team, whose structure held 19 dictionaries and eight science textbooks, included Josh Kulifay, Connor Sperati, Connor Saxon and Matt Duran.
The third-place structure held 19 dictionaries and five science textbooks. Team members included Tyler Dillon, Brandon Devine and Mitchel McTigue.
