Newton Falls defeats Glenwood

The eighth-grade boys fell to Newton Falls 31-22 Jan. 6.

The Spartan defense played hard and kept the team in the game. Leading scorers for BGMS offense were Darnell Walton and Benji Roberts.

The seventh-grade boys lost to Newton Falls by a score of 42-37 Jan. 6.

The Spartans were led by Preston Stitt who contributed 10 points and Devan Cool who had seven. The Spartans had great defensive efforts by Gavin Dill and Jamison Lytle.

Glenwood girls top Newton Falls

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade girls pushed their record to 4-1 with a hard fought game against Newton Falls Jan. 6.

Leading the team to a big victory was Krista Johnson. Taylor Broll, Jessica Fowler and Ely Larrier helped with rebounding and Marisa Hanna and Rickasia Wallace added strong defense.

The eighth-grade Spartans improved to 3-2 on the year after the 31-18 victory over the Newton Falls Tigers Jan. 6.

The team was led by Amanda Lipke with 15 points. Also contributing to the scoring was Amanda Moss with five, Jessica Fox with four points, Alison Green with three and Lexi Perez and Breanna Crenshaw with two points a piece.

Local hockey player skates at Heinz Field

Alexis Stutz of Boardman played in an intersquad game Jan. 3 at the outdoor rink at Heinz Field.

Stutz is a member of the Pittsburgh Amateur Penguins U12 girls hockey tournament and travel team which was invited to play in a Celebration of Girls in Ice Hockey event hosted by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Come to a night at the races Jan. 29

The Boardman Lady Spartans Fastpitch Softball team will host its biggest fundraiser event, Night at the Races, Jan. 29 at the Operating Engineer’s Hall, 29 McClurg Road.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and races begin at 7 p.m.

The cost is $5 and will allow those over 21 to enjoy salad, wings, pizza and more. Soft drinks and beer will be included.

A Super Bowl block pool, number boards, Chinese auction and 50/50 drawings are planned. For information, call Debbie Huck at 330-503-6650.

Strong week for freshmen

The Boardman freshman girls basketball team finished out the week with a 26-18 win over Canton GlenOak Saturday.

GlenOak jumped out to an early lead, but Giovanna Silvestri took over the game in the second quarter. She finished the game with 16 points and eight rebounds. Alexia Santiago and Anna Patoray handled the point guard duties and combined to score seven points. Nikki Negron added two points and an outstanding defensive effort.

The win came after 38-28 loss to Jackson on Jan. 5. During the game, the girls finished with only six players as the rest have moved up to play junior varsity and varsity ball.

Alyssa Conti led the scoring for the Spartans with eight points. Mollie Donnelly contributed seven in only two quarters. Patoray also hit a three-pointer in a five-point effort.

The entire freshman team played and scored in its 81-12 win over Canton McKinley on Jan. 4. Kelly Tomcsanyi led the scoring with 26 points. Megan Volosin added 16 and Nikki Hillard had 13.

Glenwood girls get win over Hubbard

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade girls scored a 41-11 victory over Hubbard on Jan. 5. Leading the scoring were Natalie Wilson with nine points, Elli Rhitz and Krista Johnson with eight.

Katie Platt and Bailey Brandt added six and Jessica Fowler and Marissa Hanna scored two each. Tough defense from Rickasia Wallace, Ely Larrier and Taylor Broll keyed the win.

Lady Spartans suffer loss in overtime

The Boardman Glenwood eighth-grade girls basketball team suffered a tough loss in overtime against Hubbard 31-28 on Jan. 5. The top two leading scorers were Amanda Moss with 15 points and Amanda Lipke with 11 points. Jessica Fox contributed six rebounds.

BGMS Seventh-grade boys team defeats Howland

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade boys basketball team defeated Howland 44-13 on Jan. 5.

The Spartans had a complete team victory with every player contributing on the offense and defensive side of the ball. Offensively, the Spartans were led by Devin Curd and Craig Wawrosch. Defensively, Joe Voytko and Andrew Wagner had great games.

Glenwood boys come up short in overtime

The Glenwood Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball team dropped a close contest against Hubbard 37-30 on Jan. 5. Tthe team overcame a four-point deficit with less than 1 minute remaining to send the game into overtime.

Darnell Walton and Mike Marquette led the defense, while Walton, Marcus Smith and Bin Roberts were high scorers on offense.
