Art show reflects students’ hard work

Watson Elementary celebrated the winners of the Reflections Program by hosting an art show on Dec. 13.
The art department created an atmosphere similar to what you’d find at an art gallery in order to honor the students’ achievements.
Art teacher Julie Webb saw the extent of the student’s hard work.
“This year, we had 23 students in the Reflections Art Program, which asks students to explore themes like this year’s ‘Together We Can’ through art, photography, and writing. For their hard work, we wanted the kids to experience what a real art show is all about,” Webb shared.
Five volunteers from Frank Ohl acted as the servers, handing out bite-sized appetizers of hot dogs, cheese and rice krispies.
After the complimentary snacks and art viewing, the winners of reflections awards in the primary and intermediate categories were announced. The judging was conducted by Becky Keck of the SMART Center at YSU and Wayne Gruver of the Butler Art Museum, who focused less on technique and more on how the students used their artistic visions to portray the theme.
“The reaction from the kids and their families was overwhelmingly positive,” Webb shared after the show. “I was happy that the students were able to experience an evening in art culture that they may have never had to chance to explore before.”
