BERWICK, Pa.

The owner of a proposed campsite in northeastern Pennsylvania has been fined and cited for safety violations in the wake of a fatal trench collapse.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration assessed a $7,500 penalty against Stephen Bodnar, 50, of Berwick.

Bodnar and James Berry, 35, were working at the future site of the Bodnarosa Motel and Campground in Salem Township last April. A trench caved in, hurting Bodnar and killing Berry.

The Times Leader of Wilkes-Barre reported Thursday that Bodnar’s three citations include failing to adequately protect employees. He could not be reached to comment.

The violations were issued in August and settled on Dec. 17.
