BOARDMAN

Police continue to search for a man suspected in a Thursday morning bank robbery.

Officers were called to First Place National Bank at 7025 Market St., just north of U.S. Route 224, after a man walked into the building and said he had a weapon, although officers later said no one actually saw a weapon, around 10:15 a.m.

Police said the man was described as very tall, thin and white wearing a black coat and black ski mask with white around the edges of the eyes.

He had not been found as of late Thursday night.

The man ran off with a bag of cash, although the exact amount has yet to be released, said Detective Sgt. Glen Riddle.

He left out the front door and ran north toward the Wagon Wheel motel and possibly drove away in a car that was parked near that location, said Lt. Albert Kakascik of Boardman police.

“He did leave on foot. There were some tracks, but of course, it’s unknown if it was him or another person walking at the time, but that’s why we requested the canine unit,” Kakascik said.

No customers were inside the bank at the time of the robbery, he added.

“We’re actively pursuing some leads, immediately, right now,” Kakascik said at the scene about 10:45 a.m.

Riddle declined to give further information on any suspects.

Riddle said bank robberies are uncommon in the township. The last time one occurred was at least two years ago.

The FBI and Mahoning Valley Violent Crime Task Force also are investigating the robbery.
